Coping With Dry Inlamed Skin, Might That Be Psoriasis?

By: Fred Duckworth

Psoriasis is one of the most common diseases treated by dermatologists in the US.

Current medical studies indicate that Psoriasis is possibly caused by liver dysfunction and may also be related to immune system functions. Generally what occurs is that patches of inflamed red skin called plaques characterize the most symptoms. The most visible symptoms are usually itching, limited joint mobility and pain in and around the affected area.

In the past ten years we have learned that the rash we see in psoriasis is a result of a disorder in the immune system. Normally immune system attacks cancers and infections which attempt to invade the body. In psoriasis certain immune system cells, called T cells, become over activated - and this results in changes in the skin and joints.

Psoriasis can begin at any age. It usually starts with scaly red patches appearing on the scalp, knees and/or elbows. The best initial diagnosis is by a trained medical practitioner who can do a biopsy of the troubled area and examine it under a microscope.

Many alternative therapies for dealing with Psoriasis are available and are widely publicized. These include the use of soaps with high salt content, purging liver treatments, ultra violet light therapies and many different topical lotions.

In the past many psoriasis treatments focused on cortisone treatments and were also very vitamin D intensive.

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests the following steps for psoriasis patients:

a) Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.

b) If you are going to be in the sun for more than 20 minutes, make sure you wear sunscreen every day.

c) Sunscreen usually takes 30 minutes to protect the skin so make sure that you apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors.

d) Reapply the sunscreen every two hours.

e) Don't forget to wear sunglasses that filter UVA and UVB rays.

At the present time there is no known cure for psoriasis. However, due to intensive medical research there are effective treatments that will assist in providing fast relief. Psoriasis patients are often instructed to stay away froma alcohol as that will only dry the skin further.

Nutritional supplements that assist in hydrating the skin are fish oil, flax seed oil and borage oil.

A greater understanding of some of the cellular factors that contribute to psoriasis are offering new hope for patients.

One topical skin lotion that has been very effective in providing fast psoriasis relief Psoriaway. This is a topical cream combining natural moisturizers, coal tar, aloe Vera, blended in a unique formula to make this product extremely soothing and effective in dealing with a psoriasis outbreak. Psoriaway has been tested in nursing homes, in the medical field and in the retail market with exciting and immediate results.

None of these treatments have been proven conclusively effective in entirely removing the symptoms of psoriasis forever. However Psoriaway's unique ingredients and history offer hope and promise.

The current statistics indicate that roughly 2% of the population will have this skin disease.
